When it came to the highest honors at the Milwaukee High School Sports Awards show, presented by Festival Foods, this was the year of the multi-sport athlete.
Kettle Moraine junior Grace Grocholski and Lake Country Lutheran senior Luke Haertle were named the female and male athletes of the year by the Journal Sentinel at the sixth annual event, which was held at the Pabst Theater on Wednesday night.
The event honored the area's top athletes in every WIAA-sponsored sport and featured a Q&A with Green Bay Packers' first-round draft pick Quay Walker. The show also recognized the area's top coach and team as well as saluted an athlete who overcame great odds to compete.
At the top of the list, however, were Grocholski and Haertle, two-sport standouts who led teams to state championships this year.
Grocholski earned first-team all-state distinction in volleyball and basketball and led her teams to the state tournament. The volleyball team's run to the state semifinals was the best in school history. The basketball team's state title run was its first in 23 years with Grocholski capping the run by tying a career high with 34 points in the championship game.
Haertle, who will join the University of Wisconsin men's basketball team next season as a walk-on, was a first-team all-state selection in football and basketball. The all-state selection in football passed for almost 2,000 yards last season and for almost 5,000 yards for his career. In hoops, heled Lutheran in scoring, rebounds, assists and steals in a season that ended with a Division 3 state championship.
