Benefits of Using Natural Face Wash for Sensitive Skin
Using a natural face wash for sensitive skin offers numerous benefits, making it a popular choice for those seeking gentle and effective skincare solutions. Here are some compelling reasons to switch to a natural face wash:
- Gentle on the Skin: Natural ingredients like aloe vera, honey, and chamomile are soothing and less likely to cause irritation or redness, which is crucial for sensitive skin prone to reactions.
- Free from Harsh Chemicals: Many conventional face washes contain sulfates, parabens, synthetic fragrances, and dyes that can strip the skin’s natural oils and exacerbate sensitivity. Natural options are free from these harsh chemicals.
- Moisturizing and Nourishing: Ingredients like jojoba oil, coconut oil, and honey not only cleanse but also hydrate and nourish the skin, maintaining its moisture barrier and promoting overall skin health.
- Reduces Risk of Allergies: By using simple, recognizable ingredients, natural face washes lower the likelihood of allergic reactions compared to products with complex, synthetic formulas.
- Environmentally Friendly: Natural face washes are often biodegradable and free from microplastics, making them a sustainable choice for eco-conscious consumers. Just another good reason to make your own face wash!
- Customizable to Your Skin Needs: Homemade or small-batch natural face washes can be tailored with specific ingredients to suit your skin’s needs, such as anti-inflammatory chamomile for redness or hydrating aloe vera for dryness.
- Avoids Over-Drying: Many natural cleansers balance the skin’s pH and cleanse without over-drying, a common issue with conventional face washes that rely on strong surfactants.
- Supports a Holistic Lifestyle: For those embracing a holistic approach to health and wellness, natural skincare aligns to reduce exposure to synthetic chemicals in daily routines.
Whether you have already switched to a natural face wash or looking to switch, a natural face wash has so many benefits. Plus a natural gentle cleanser supports a healthier, more mindful approach to skincare and environmental care.
Natural Ingredients
Aloe Vera Gel
Aloe vera gel is soothing, refreshing, and gentle enough for even the tenderness of the skin. While being known to moisturize and soothe sunburns, it can also be used in DIY products since it has so many benefits for the skin. Make sure to look for an aloe vera gel that contains simple ingredients and is free of dyes.
Jojoba Oil
Jojoba is my favorite carrier oil when making homemade skincare products since it’s so perfect for moisturizing the skin. It’s full of essential vitamins and minerals including vitamins E and B that the skin needs.Jojoba oilnot only moisturizes, but it also doesn’t clog pores and soothes dry skin or sensitive skin.
A great alternative for jojoba oil in this recipe issweet almond oil. It is naturally rich in vitamins A, and E plus has antioxidant properties, while also soothing and nourishing the skin. You could also use avocado oil or fractionated coconut oil if you have those on hand instead.
Castile Soap
Castile soap is a great simple ingredient soap base for lots of easy DIYs with essential oils. When using liquid castile soap, you need a smaller amount since it’s highly concentrated. For this homemade face wash (and several other recipes), I like using the unscentedcastile soapso you get to customize the scent.
Honey
Using raw honey or manuka honey will provide the most benefits to the skin. Raw organic honey and manuka honey have not been processed, which means they have higher amounts of antifungals, antibacterial properties, and antioxidant properties. All of this means overall really good things we want for our skin. I like buyingraw organic honeyin larger volumes to save money. Plus you don’t have to worry about it going bad, since honey doesn’t have an expiration date.
Essential Oils
Essential oils are great to personalize your homemade face wash. Depending on your skin type, there are different essential oil recommendations for the skin. See them below. My favorite essential oils to use in this face wash are orange, peppermint, and lavender essential oils!

This diy face cleanser recipe comes together really easily! Gather all of your supplies and ingredients so we can get started. You will need the following items:

Homemade Face Wash Recipe for Sensitive Skin
Pour 1/3 cup of liquid castile soap, 1/3 cup of jojoba oil, 1/4 cup of aloe vera, and 2 tablespoons of honey into the glass hand soap bottle. If you want to pour directly into the bottle, you can use a small funnel. Otherwise, I recommend adding them all to a glass measuring cup and giving them a quick mix before pouring into your glass hand soap bottle.
Add 30 drops of your choice of essential oils (see below for suggestions based on skin type). For this recipe, I like using 10 drops of peppermint, 10 drops of lavender, and 10 drops of orange essential oils. The good news is that you can mix and match your essential oils for the ones you have on hand or the ones that work best for your skin type.
Next, screw on the pump of the hand soap bottle. Make sure it is tight and then shake the natural cleanser mixture. You will need to shake or turn the bottle for around a minute or until it is well combined. The mixture will separate between uses, so shake well before each use.

How to Wash Your Face for Sensitive Skin
Using a homemade face wash for sensitive skin can be incredibly soothing and effective, especially with the right technique. Begin with clean hands to avoid transferring dirt or bacteria to your face. Use lukewarm water to splash your skin, as it opens up the pores and prepares the face for cleansing, while hot water should be avoided since it can strip natural oils and cause irritation. Take a small amount of cleanser and gently massage it onto your face with your fingertips in a circular motion. Focus on areas needing extra cleansing, like the nose, forehead, and chin, while being gentle around the delicate eye area. For best results, try to limit your cleansing time to around 30 seconds to ensure the natural ingredients can clean effectively without over-drying the skin.
Once you’ve massaged the face wash into your skin, rinse thoroughly with cool water to help close your pores and refresh your face. Pat dry with a soft, clean towel to avoid causing any redness and sensitivity. After cleansing and immediately after drying the skin, apply a moisturizer or face serum to lock in hydration. This homemade mango body butter is an excellent choice to use on your face (and even your lips) after washing. Grab the recipe here to add it to your skin care routine!
For sensitive skin, limit face washing to twice a day—morning and night—to avoid disrupting the skin’s natural balance. Always do a patch test on your jawline before using new ingredients to ensure they’re safe for your skin before using all over your face for the first time.
By following these steps, you’ll get the full benefits of a natural, homemade face wash, keeping your skin calm, clean, and nourished without skin irritation!
Storing Your Homemade Face Wash
This homemade honey face wash will last 4-6 months, as long as you are storing it in a sealed container (preferably one that is glass, especially if you are using essential oils). We aren’t adding any preservatives to this recipe, however, raw honey doesn’t expire and jojoba oil can last for 2 years. Castile soap lasts for several years as well. Once you mix all the ingredients, it does bring the shelf life down considerably. Just keep an eye on your face wash for any signs of mold, slimy texture, or an unpleasant smell. Personally, I haven’t had any issues with the face wash recipe going bad. But it doesn’t hurt to know what you’re looking for just in case.
